Modes: What of the other settings on the immerse? The other algorithms on offer consist of the usual spring, hall and plate then some more unusual offerings; sustain, echo, detune and shimmer. The plate hall and spring are exactly what you would expect if you have ever used any other reverb. They are excellent algorithms and I find myself if not using the W3T using the hall for a wide cavernous reverb.

The Immerse can do full wet which when used with something like the hall setting can be perfect for ambient soundscapes. There are a couple of switches on the top for trails, when engaged this will keep the trails of the reverb going when the pedal is turned off until they fade out. And a kill dry for if running it in a parallel effects loop. I don’t so I haven’t turned this one on. I have trails turned on but I very rarely turn the pedal off so I haven’t really used this feature. This week Neunaber unveiled a new version of their flagship multi-mode stereo reverb, the Immerse MkII, which features new circuitry, and upgraded algorithms that were fully redesigned from the ground up “they are certainly the best I’ve created to date” – says Brian. As in the pedal’s previous incarnation, each mode can be tweaked through five knobs: Effect Selection, Mix, Depth, and two multi-function controls. In addition, external Kill Dry and Trails switches and stereo in/outs that can be used in mono or stereo contribute to make this stompbox also extremely flexible. Once you’ve managed to decode that array of lines and words wiggling down from the central mode control, you’ll find there are eight sounds on offer: four standard reverbs, two with ‘shimmer’, one with added echo (delay) and one intriguingly labelled ‘detune’. The bottom-right knob controls a different parameter depending on the mode, while the tone control doubles up as delay time when you’re in ‘reverb+echo’ mode.

Now with adjustable pre-delay, it enhances what you play without covering it.My pedalboard has recently had a bit of an overhaul. Firstly I altered the drive section quite substantially. Then I came across a Neunaber Immerse at a price I really couldn’t say no to. I had been looking at getting a Source Audio Collider to take care of reverb and delay, effectively reducing three pedals to one. Seeing the Immerse put a spanner in the works. I had played the MK1 and enjoyed it very much. The shimmer was excellent, a real standout. I couldn’t however find one at a price I was happy to pay. I then got my hands on the GFI Specular Reverb, which is also excellent and has an outstanding shimmer mode. The Specular did all of the ambient washy reverbs that I like and I had a Boss RV-6 for the more standard plate and spring that I used all of the time.

There’s a lot to go over here but I’ll keep it simple and focus on the more advanced features. Volume (how loud the wet signal is), Depth (how long the wet signal lasts), Type (which of the above reverbs to use), and Tone or Echo Time (Brightness or darkness of the wet signal or delay time of the echo setting).Brian Neunaber of Neunaber Audio might be based in Orange, California, but the rigor he puts into his pedal designs betrays the mitteleuropean origins of his last name (for the unaware, Germans seem to have a special gene for engineering).

Sustain– A new algorithm built on the W3T reverb. This magical, versatile effect can be configured as a sustainer or infinite reverb.The obvious advantage of this is that you have many different sounds living inside the unit at once and flit between them with the twist of a rotary switch, rather than having to ask your PC for help; the two disadvantages are that you lose the near-infinite tweakability of software, and that the control layout becomes mighty crowded. There’s no appreciable difference in price between this and an Expanse box.
